Strike

A wave of protests is beginning to invade Chile. It’s been many years since the Chileans students are asking for an educational system based on social justice. Nowadays, Chile is a country where the inequalities are one of the biggest social issues. To go to university is a luxury. That’s why many students decided to organized demonstrations and strikes in the universities. In 2011, the movement took a serious importance with thousands of students walking in the streets but the government didn’t really react.

As a French student, I’m pretty impressed by the commitment of the Chileans students in the political life. I attended some student assemblies and I think that when the students are expressing themselves, you can feel a strong desire to find another model of society, fairer and less based on consumerism. I support the movement. The only negative point is that, to me, not going to class can be useful only I the students are actually mobilizing themselves in the university or in the street. Staying at home won’t help. Maybe the Chileans students should find other ways to mobilize themselves. Anyway, I’m going home in a month and I’m really happy to have witness this type of social mobilization. I really hope that students are going to get what they want!

  1. Going in the street is a good way to show their indignation but the government doesn't see and doesn't hear what they are asking for. Maybe they should find other ways to moibilize but the governement attitude is not very democratic here.
